Why Our Family Will Always Be a Wish Family

By Jaime Wintringer

The WintringersElla’s wish was granted two years ago, but Make-A-Wish is still a part of her life – in more ways than one. Even long after our days on the beach in the Bahamas, the impact of her wish lives on. It is a power I truly believe in.

Experiences shape who you are as a person, and a wish experience is truly different than any other. It gives children renewed energy and strength – something we’ve seen firsthand before the wish and after.

Most recently, Ella went into the hospital for a major reconstructive surgery. She was expected to be hospitalized for at least one month – she was out in less than a week and a half. Her surgeon was floored, and didn’t understand how she did it. He was stunned, at a loss for words; he’d never seen anything like it. I definitely believe it’s because of the wish. It gave her the power to be able to fight. Those memories excited her. She had something to reflect on, and to motivate her to want to get home.

But the wish doesn’t only impact the wish child – it touches the entire family. A wish is truly unexplainable. We can give our kids a vacation, but we can’t give them the experience of a wish. So many times, my other children were jostled around, their schedules and daily lives shifted for Ella’s doctors appointments and hospital visits. My kids are happy, but it was completely different being there on the wish to experience it together. It changed us and brought us closer.

Since Ella’s wish, we’ve attended several events on behalf of Make-A-Wish, always attending as a family. When people see the entire family, not just the wish child, they see the full impact of a wish. They see how excited we all are about Make-A-Wish and how it’s affected everyone involved.

We feel it’s important to give back to the community and Make-A-Wish, because Make-A-Wish and the community have truly given us so much. They’ve given us the pure power of a wish, and we’ll do everything we can to help other families experience that power too.
